
Kallam Anji Reddy is an Indian entrepreneur in the pharmaceutical industry, the founder of Dr Reddy's Labs.
He spent his early years in the village of Tadepalli in Guntur District, where his father grew turmeric. Reddy graduated from the local high school and went on to get his first bachelor of science degree from A.C College at Guntur City in 1958 [1].
Dr Reddy holds a B.Sc.-Tech in Pharmaceuticals and Fine chemicals from Bombay University and a PhD in chemical engineering from the National Chemical Laboratory, Pune (1969).
CareerHe served in the state-owned Indian Drugs and Pharmaceuticals Limited (1969-1975), was founder and managing director of Uniloids Ltd (1976-1980) and Standard Organics Limited (1980-1984), before founding Dr Reddy’s Labs in 1984.
Dr Reddy's LabsDr Reddy’s Labs has been credited with turning the Indian bulk drug industry from dependence on imports in the mid 1980s to self reliance in the mid 1990s and finally into the export-oriented industry that it is today. It was the first company to take up drug discovery research in India (in 1993). In April 2001 Dr Reddy’s Labs became the first Asian pharmaceutical company outside Japan to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange. The company has revenues of Rs.1947 crore (US $446 million) as of fiscal year 2005 and is India’s second largest pharmaceutical company.
